SOUTH KHORASAN

South khorasan province is a province located in eastern Iran. Birjand is the center of the province. The other major cities are ferdows, Tabas and Qaen. This new province, is but the old Quhistan which was included into greater Khorasan in the Iranian administrative planning. However, historically Quhistan forms a separate entity, with a distinct culture, history, environment and ecology. South Khorasan is one of the three provinces that were created after the division of Khorasan in 2004. The most populated city and the capital of south Khorasan Province is Birjand, borders Qaen County in the north, the cities of Darmain and Sarbisheh in the east, the city of Nehbandan and Kerman province in the south and the cities of Sarayan and Tabas in the west. Birjand is one of the top producers of saffron, which is known as red gold for its commercial value, in Iran.

Golshan Garden of Tabas

Tabas is located in central Iran, 950 km southeast of Tehran in South Khorasan province. At first, it was part of the greater Khorasan province, but in 2001 it was annexed to Yazd province. However, in 2013 it was returned to Khorasan and it became part of South Khorasan province. The name Khorasan means the land of the rising sun. There are two other places in Khorasan called Tabas, but the name Tabas usually refers to the city under discussion. Golshan Garden is related to Afsharid- Zandiyeh dynasty and is located in Tabas. This pleasant garden is one of the most important Iranian gardens. Golshan Garden was built by Mir Hasan Khan III (3rd Tabas Governor) from Afsharid Khan-governing dynasty who was assigned by Nader Shah for governing in Tabas region. Golshan Garden is a vertical garden. There is a big pond in the middle and pelicans swim there. There are various plant species compatible with different climates. Different decorative palm, orange and trees, grapes and decorative flowers have turned this garden into one of the most unique and dreamy gardens of Iran. Every year this garden is the host of a considerable number of new year tourists and passing travelers, especially during the New Year days (Eve of Nowrouz).

Rahim-Abad Garden

Rahim-Abad Mansion and Garden is in Birjand City, one of the beautiful gardens of Iran and in a village with the same name. Rahim-Abad Garden has two entrances and access to the interior parts is possible only through these entrances. The Mansion and Garden in Birjand is in a special position among Iranian gardens for its special architecture and decorations. The major part of this mansion is the mirror hall and most of the decorations in the rooms and halls are molding and mirror works.

Arg-e Kolah-Farangy

Arg-e Kolah-Farangy is a historical monument of Birjand that is now the place of governorship in South Khorasan province. Attributed to Amir Hassan Khan Sheibani, the building once belonged to Amir Alam, who donated it to the governor of Birjand. This building belongs to the late Zand and the early Qajar eras and is known under different names, including Arg-e Hesam al-Dole, Bibi Arus Castle and Arg-e-Sarkar. The nearest tourist attraction to the Arg is Akbarieh Garden.

(Kal Jeni (Canyon of Jinn

Kal jeni (canyon of Jinn) is an extremely weird natural attraction. This silent and lonely canyon is formed by water and wind erosion and shows stunning natural forms. These surreal landscapes and the mysterious sound created when the wind blows through the canyon have led to this belief that this canyon is the territory of Jinn and anyone who steps through this valley alone might be captured by them.

Nay-Band Vilage

Nay-Band is a village in Kavir Rural District at the middle of the Tabas International Road, the green roar of palm trees attracts every passerby. This green cover looks like a mirage in the desert, but in fact what’s ahead of you is a village called Ney-Band, which has been shaped as an evolutionary milestone called Masouleh Desert. The unique features of this village have attracted the attention of tourists.

Nehbandan Windmill

The windmills of the Nehbandan are one of the tourist attractions of South Khorasan Province. Nehbandan Windmill is very similar to windmills of Sistan.

Khezri Stone Bridge & Farsan Cave

In terms of leisure, Farsan stone bridge has a very suitable condition. Stone bridge with 30 meters of length and a 20-meter height alongside several other small and large caves is the shelter of birds of prey, especially wild dove. Farsan cave is also a cave left from the Mesolithic age, and despite having ancient layers, no investigation has been conducted in it yet.
